Los Angeles County Animal Control Officers now have the authority to declare a dog vicious, a label that can lead to the dog being put to death. Now judged by officers with no proper training, education, or relevant experience your dog could be killed in 5 days which is not even enough time to hire a lawyer to appeal the decision.
The Los Angeles Department of Animal Control is currently deficient in the quality of their staffing as well as their care for the animals as it is. Many of the employees have no business being around any living beings and now they will be able to make decisions that prior to the passing of this amendment only a judge could make.
This will mean death for many dogs as judgements handed out by unqualified Animal Control Officers can be based on a number of pre-conceived notions that the officer may have about certain breeds of dogs as well as the ethnic backgrounds of certain owners. Dogs that are judged by their looks alone like pit bulls, Rottweilers, Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, Chow Chows, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, Presa Canarios, Siberian Huskys, Wolf hybrids and ANY dogs that are mixed with any of the aforementioned breeds are in danger!
These breeds are publicly demonized and condemned for the bad acts of a few; they are stereotyped as “vicious”, “killers”, and “dangerous” based on a very loose appearance-based definition of breed, not their individual behavior.
The streets will run red with blood and it could be your dogs! Speak up, the dogs in Los Angeles are depending on you. If not you, who? If not now, when?

EMAIL BLOCK:
molina@bos.lacounty.gov;seconddistrict@bos.lacounty.gov;executiveoffice@bos.lacounty.gov;
zev@bos.lacounty.gov;fifthdistrict@lacbos.org
Please be respectful, but let them know how OUTRAGED you are. (A) That they passed the amendment and (B) That they didn’t take anything the opposition said into consideration.
Immediately after the board listened to a dispassionate 45 second speech from Marcia Mayeda (director of the DACC promoting her amendment the board unceremoniously approved it.
Why did people bother waiting for 6 hours to voice their dissent?
Why did 3 lawyers prepare documents so they could address the board with sound legal arguments against this amendment? None of the board members bothered to even look at the article Attorney and Animal Rights Activist Shannon Keith handed out.
Does this sound like a democratic process to you?
