UPDATE: Bones, the pit bull – Betrayed by his “owner” and the New York City Department of Health – CALL TO ACTION

UPDATE 1/15/2012 – Custody of BONES to Lexus Project

Bones, victim of abuse, victim of the broken system

Meet Bones, a dog who will most likely be killed by the New York City Department of Health because he might have been an unwilling accomplice in the murder of his junkie owner’s roommate. Bones was allegedly used as a weapon by junkie Shaun Dyer during an argument between himself and David Shadha last month. The abusive owner allegedly made Bones  bite the roommate David Shadha but it was not Bones that caused his death. It was a blow to the head perpetrated by Shaun Dyer with what was most likely a metal pipe.

One person who knew Bones said that he was a good natured dog while another neighbor told a different story and said he was bitten before by Bones this past June 17th . The neighbor said he reported the bite to the city but nothing was done. Then there are others who report that they saw Shaun Dyer, who has been arrested upwards of twenty times, repeatedly abuse Bones.

Bones is also a victim here and shouldn’t be held responsible for a murder he did not commit. Nor should the Department of Health be allowed to quietly kill Bones because he was a victim of abuse and because they failed to do their job back in June. Had they done what they were supposed to and properly investigate, Bones would not be in this situation now.

According the NYC Prosecutor Coleen Balbert’s office it is the DOH who will decide the fate of Bones. The person I spoke with would give me no other information except to say to call the AC&C and the DOH. Neither the AC&C or the DOH will give out any information about Bones citing it is an ongoing investigation.

According to a source at Animal Care & Control where Bones has been since the crime “He’s just as happy as can be”. This statement speaks volumes for those of us who know the AC&C is hell on earth for the animals there. The Department of Health who oversees the AC&C is also run by heartless individuals who continually betray the animals they are charged with protecting, like Bones.

CALL TO ACTION:
Speak up for Bones! He does not deserve to die for a murder he did not commit. And he deserves to be released to a qualified rescue for rehabilitation. ASK QUESTIONS and MAKE SOME NOISE!

Contact the Department of Health &  AC&C: JBank@nycacc.org; tfarley@health.nyc.gov; rgentles@nycacc.orgdkass@health.nyc.gov
Contact the Prosecutor Coleen Balbert – 212-335-3598

SPEAK UP! IF NOT YOU, WHO? IF NOT NOW, WHEN?

Speak up, Bones is depending on us!

  1. I just sent a form e-mail to each e-mail address above advocating to Bones’ release. Hopefully this will tug at their heart strings for them to do what’s right.

  2. @loveydove @The_Lil_General This dog was owned by a violent junkie! Bones has clearly been the VICTIM of ABUSE himself! It is not the dog’s fault! #SAVETHISAMERICANBULLDOG #YONKERSPLSHELP

  3. It appears evident, from the close up picture of Bones, that he has been abused in some way. It actually looks like his head and the areas nearby are bloodied. It may be blood, or it may be an unaddressed skin condition. Either way, that is abuse, purposeful or neglect. This dog has clearly been dealt a raw deal with the garrulous owner he is so unlucky to have. He should be evaluated BY AN INDEPENDENT PARTY (NOT the ACC or DOH) to determine the possibility of rehabilitating him to join the ranks of cherished pets.

  4. Linda Powell says:

Bones is not responsible for anything, he was an abused dog!!!! Bones owner is the one who caused the death and why would Bones even be involved??? Well maybe the dead guy was attacking Bones owner and Bones was protecting his owner and himself! Purely bull crap and bones should not be responsible whatsoever! Actaully it is the DOH that should be charged for NOT following through with investagating back in June! HOLD THE DOH RESPONSIBLE FOR A CHANGE AND LEAVE THE POOR DOG ALONE!!! Bones can find a good home where he can be rehabilitated and get some love…..I think the prosecutor should be investagating the AC&C and the DOH….

  5. I just sent the following letter to the named interests in the article. I would be ahpyy to donate monitarily to a fund if one is set up, for his rescue.
    To Whom It May Concern:
I have read about the plight of poor Bones the Pittie Dog who was owned by a druggie murderer and abandoned in the meley. It is my understanding that he is sitting in the The New Hope Office at the NYCACC, awaiting the decision of what is to be done with him. I implore you to allow this poor animal a chance . As I understand you can call in Jeff Coltenback to evaluate him and then release him to a qualified rescue. I would be more than happy to contribute monetarily to this cause.
I recently adopted a cat from the same shelter.
Please advise mne as to where to donate funds for Bones.
    Most Sincerely

  6. The AC&C could care less, the only way to save this dog is to get enough media attention to shame them into releasing him.

Emailed all contacts listed -let’s all hope that they respond to so many responses and do the right thing.

  9. YOU KNOW SOMETHING YOU PEOPLE GOT A LOT OF NERVE GOING TO SAVE THIS DOG WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE THE SLIGHTEST CLUE AS TO WHAT KIND OF ACT THIS DOG HAS TAKEN AGAINST HUMAN KIND. THIS VERY DOG HAS BITTEN 10 HUMAN BIENGS INCLUDING A 8 YR CHILD WHO WAS BITTEN ON THE FACE AND MYSELF ON THE LEG WHICH PUT ME IN THE HOSPITAL FOR A WEEK WITH SURGERY TO GO WITH IT. THIS DOG IS A DANGEROUS RISK TO SOCIETY AS WE KNOW IT. THIS DOG SHOULD BE PUT DOWN.

    • BSL News says:

THE DOG WAS ABUSED! He had no choice when it came to what he was subjected to by all the human monsters in his life. How dare you judge him. Of course he deserves to be given a chance at a real life. He will go to a rescue that specializes in rehabilitation and fairly evaluate him there. And shame on you for not caring that the dog was in an abusive situation. Like a child, he had no choice. Blame his irresponsible “owner” before you place blame on him. Luck for Bones, he has people who are for once doing right by him. Sloane Quealy-Miner

  10. koko3mar says:

Shame on those who blame the dog rather than the owner for abuse, I hope Bones find a loving home for once.
