UPDATE 5/20/13: Marky is doing really well! His scrotum area, which was cut up from being dragged by the car  that hit him is almost all healed up. He is still at our vet though as we do not have anywhere for him to go. 5-10-13, A stray male pit bull was hit by a car this morning outside our house in Far Rockaway at approximately 7:30 this morning. Matt was alerted to the accident by our neighbor who saw this precious boy get struck by a speeding car who never stopped.  Upon being hit the dog fell to the ground and let out a scream. Our neighbor banged on our door and got Matt and together they brought this baby to safety in our yard.

Matt observed blood in his anal area so while he tended to the dog, now called Marky, I made an emergency page to our vet’s office and made arrangements to bring him in immediately. A full exam including a rectal exam were done and revealed no internal bleeding and no broken bones.  During the examination the vet discovered that the blood was coming from his scrotum. He was dragged by the car down the street on this area. The vet is keeping him for continued observation for the next few days while also giving him antibiotics. He has been given all his shots as well. Marky is just about 1 years old and he weighs in at 68lbs.

With all Marky has been through he has had the sweetest disposition. He is an incredible loving and friendly boy. He cuddled with Matt all the way to the vet’s office. Please help Marky! Matt Miner, Christine Drakatos and I are thankful for any help you can provide.

On Saturday evening Christine Drakatos, who leads The Far Rockaway Rescue Project, received a call from our friends at Guardians of Rescue.  They had been alerted to a dog in need of help in our area. We immediately responded and went to meet the owner and his dog named Sunday.

The owner, who is in his late teens, and his dog Sunday lived in the house the boy shares with his mom up until Hurricane Sandy. Like many dogs, Sunday became extremely stressed after the storm as Far Rockaway was extremely hard hit.  She developed some fear based behavioral issues like having accidents in the house which prompted the mother of the boy to kick Sunday out. With nowhere for her to go, the owner decided to keep Sunday in the boiler room of a neighboring abandoned house which is where she has been for the past few months. This is where he set up a bed and food and water for her.  

When we arrived at the abandoned house where Sunday was another piece of my heart broke off and shattered into a million pieces. Christine and I followed the kid as we made our way through the trash and debris to the back of the abandoned house. He opened up the door to the boiler room and out she came. Her face had scratches and some minor cuts from a scuffle the boy said she got in with some neighbors dogs. And just when we thought it couldn’t get worse we learned that Sunday had recently also given birth and all of her puppies were stolen last week. We immediately asked the owner to surrender her to us but he said no. So we quickly formulated a plan to help her the best way we could until he does agree to surrender her to us.

We set her up in a friend’s yard where we can work Sunday so she learns she can trust us. The owner will also be able to visit with her every day. Sunday is extremely bonded to him and is naturally fearful when he is not around. Whenever he walks away she begins to cry. With his help we were able to clean and washed her face thoroughly. We set her up with fresh food, water and treats. She has a huge igloo with fresh straw and we are doing our best to let her know she is safe now. While the situation is not ideal we are doing the best we can for her until the owner agrees to give her up to us which we are confident that he will.

Pocket Pittie Blondie!

Beautiful little Blondie is a spunky little girl who loves to run, play, give kisses and snuggle.  She’s a girl full of love and playfulness who wants nothing more than to please.  Blondie is great with people and loves other dogs. She picks up on commands quickly and is eager to please.  She’s the kind of girl who will play fetch for 30 minutes straight and then cuddle up with you while you read a book. Though she might interrupt you for a belly scratch every now and then.

When you meet Blondie you would never know that she has been through so much in her little life. Blondie was dumped on a seedy street corner last summer in Far Rockaway. Fortunately Christine Drakatos who leads The Far Rockaway Rescue Project was able to save her. Blondie was immediately taken into a rescue’s shelter, but like many animals, Blondie found this situation extremely stressful. By the time we began fostering her she had already developed a serious case of “happy tail” and upon our vets recommendation we had to have them amputate it. Throughout this entire experience Blondie’s sweet demeanor and good spirit never wavered. I really can’t say enough about precious Blondie. She is one of the funniest and sweetest dogs I have ever met.  

Blondie is 1 1/2 years old and weighs in at 40lbs. She is up to date on her shots, spayed and HW negative.

DESPERATE NEED OF FOOD AND TRAP: Every week I help Christine Drakatos , who leads The Far Rockaway Rescue Project, feed and care for the feral, stray, neglected and junkyard dogs and cats of Far Rockaway. We use 200 to 300 lbs of food every week and we are in dire need of contributions. Without us these animals do not eat. PLEASE help us.

We are also in desperate need of replacing our trap that we use to catch the feral dogs. Due to Hurricane Sandy our trap was destroyed. This is devastating for us because it means that until we have a new one no more adult ferals can be caught and rescued. These feral adult dogs suffer immensely if not rescued by us as most of them have heartworms and other ailments that require medical attention. Not to mention they all need to be spayed or neutered.

We cannot continue to allow cops to hurt innocent animals and put the lives of innocent people in danger. We must speak up regarding this clear abuse of power by police officers who are supposed to serve and protect, not terrorize and needlessly kill the innocent!

Staten Island Police Officers shot and almost fatally wounded an innocent pit bull named Baby Girl on Saturday, April 6^th in Schmul Park, Travis, Staten Island.

Two other dogs (not Baby Girl) were involved in a scuffle in the park. In the midst of the owner attempting to break up the fight she got bit. The dogs DID NOT “attack” and turn on their owner.   Baby Girl was NOT involved, she was running AWAY from the fight when cops fired 3 rounds into her. Baby Girl has NEVER had any issues with either people or animals. In fact, her best friend is a bunny rabbit.

If the shooting of Baby Girl by police wasn’t heinous enough “they hid her in an ESU truck and lied about her whereabouts. The family discovered where she was hidden, and took her immediately to get help. The help she never should have needed, had she not been shot running AWAY from the danger the police officer represented. The help she never should have needed, had she been aided instead of covered up by an irresponsible police officer who has been irresponsible in the past, yet still on the job with a gun she can’t seem to keep up with or use properly. Oh, and just to make things more confusing, an off-duty officer made the decision to get in on the shooting as well”

It is clear to me that many officers believe they have a free pass to kill when it comes to pit bulls. These morally bankrupt cops repeatedly used the tired defense that the dog was “vicious” or “aggressive” when in countless cases the witnesses have reported otherwise and the shootings unjustified. UPDATE 3/12/13 -BSL News has learned that B&N canceled Michael Vick in-store book signings. They have cited threats of physical violence as the reason. We do not condone threats of physical violence and feel it is too bad that B&N didn’t cancel for ethical reasons and that it took such extreme measures for them to do the right thing.

To Barnes & Noble Decision Makers,

Either you forgot or you just don’t care that Michael Vick murdered countless innocent dogs. Maybe you feel that dogs don’t count. I, along with many other animal rights activists and advocates are here to tell you that they do. If Barnes & Noble wouldn’t have books signings for a serial killer whose victims were human, then you shouldn’t have book signings for one whose victims were animals.

Michael Vick fought dogs for sport, and when his players (dogs) didn’t win him money he hung, drowned, electrocuted or shot them. He tied innocent dogs to rape stands for the brutal practice of mating. Not to mention the beatings and the syringes full of drugs forcibly injected into the dogs. It was hell on earth for the dogs at Bad Newz Kennels who had no say in their actions.

Even though some of the dogs made it out alive, many of those dogs continue to suffer to this day. Yes, Michael Vick spent time behind bars. But his minute prison stint is a joke in comparison to his heinous crimes. He should not continue to be celebrated, idolized and rewarded for his bad behavior by making millions in blood money.

Whether for business or leisure I will never buy anything from Barnes & Noble again. Shame on you for contributing to Sick Vick’s success.

Blondie

Meet our recent foster Blondie, a happy go lucky little girl who was rescued by The Far Rockaway Rescue Project. She wants nothing more than to play, cuddle and receive tummy rubs. Unfortunately this precious earth angel was already suffering from an extreme case of “happy tail” when we began fostering her two and a half weeks ago. Blondie was in a shelter situation and like many dogs found this situation stressful which resulted in her developing this issue. Blondie had been doing really well with it and was leaving it alone which is why we were so surprised to find this morning that she had chewed the end down to the bone. We took her to the vet immediately and were told that she has to have an amputation due to the severity.

3-1-13 Lucy is feeling much better!

UPDATE 3/1/13: Lucy is getting out of the hospital today. We are so excited! She was taken off IV fluids, antibiotics and vitamin K yesterday and was switched to injectable antibiotics. Today she was given her shots and will be spayed next week provided she is strong enough. She will also leave with oral antibiotics for the next 14 days. UPDATE 2/27/13: The vet thinks that Lucy has a bad case of bronchial pneumonia that was left untreated and her coughing caused a pulmonary hemorrhage causing her to cough up blood. They are keeping her over night again tonight to confirm this and rule out HW and anything else. She is continuing to receive IV antibiotics and fluids. She kept her breakfast down today and has also kept the water she drank down. We are hopeful Lucy will be ok

Today The Far Rockaway Rescue Project received a call from a good samaritan that a young pit bull who was throwing up blood had run into a building in Far Rockaway that was under construction due to damage from Hurricane Sandy. Within a few minutes we arrived to find the sweetest and gentlest little girl who we are now calling Lucy. We found her inside the building in a corner surrounded by little puddles of blood that she had been throwing up. She was shaking and scared.

We walked precious Lucy to the car where we rushed her to the vet where she remains. Lucy was immediately seen by our doctor who gave her an exam and an x-ray which shows abnormalities in her lungs. Lucy is being given a battery of tests and is currently on IV fluids and antibiotics while the doctor and radiologist determine what is wrong.
